COCONINO COUNTY, ARIZONA– A Californian BASE jumper passed away Tuesday while wingsuit-flying amongst cliffs on the Arizona-Utah border, inning accordance with the Los Angeles Times.
The body of Matthew Kenney, an experienced BASE jumper, is caught in a crevice about 600 feet listed below where he jumped in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, Lieutenant Bret Axlund of the Coconino County Constable's Office said in a press conference mentioned in the Los Angeles Times report.
Authorities said Kenney hit the side of the mountain, however it's uncertain how this happened, reported Fox News. Axlund said it appeared that Kenney was trying to clear a notch, an imprint in the mountains, but did not have sufficient elevation to do so.
A helicopter was not able to land and retrieve the body due to spots of ice and high surface on top of the canyon, said Axlund. Kenney's death is the very first attributed to BASE leaping in the Paria Canyon, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Matt Frohlich, a buddy of Kenney's, told Fox News that Kenney was a knowledgeable and skilled jumper who had actually traveled around the world.
" It's a quite big hit to the community," Frohlich stated to Fox News. "It is unfortunate."
Kenny had actually reportedly performed 1,000 jumps prior to the incident on Tuesday, Axlund stated.
